From the trauma of childhood upheavals to teenage pregnancy and an ill-fated marriage, Roses in Winter is the heart-wrenching story of Janet Calder.
Told from the working-class tenements of Leith, Edinburgh and Glasgow in the early twentieth-century and a more prosperous Edinburgh of the 1950s and 1960s, it is a story of abandonment and abuse, domestic violence and toxic masculinity, and the silences kept within families.
In Janet Calder’s story we find a woman whose resilience is a reminder that love and the ties that bind are even more powerful than the worst of what life can bring.
Based on a true story, Roses in Winter is about the people who pass along the pathways of our family life and make us who we are today.
It speaks to the many stories of what women have lived through - and continue to experience - behind closed doors.

Leigh is the author of several fiction and non-fiction work.
She was longlisted for an Australian Book Industry Award in 2017.
Leigh developed her love of history and storytelling growing up in Edinburgh and Kinross before emigrating to Australia.
Leigh Straw is Arts Coordinator and Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle.
